How often should my piano be tuned?

Having your piano tuned at least once a year is highly recommended. Yearly maintenance keeps your piano at proper pitch and allows us to identify and address any potential repair or regulation issues before they become major problems. Leaving your piano untuned and unmaintained for years can feel like it is saving you money, but often ends up costing more in the long run.

Certain artists, churches, institutions, and community centres may wish to tune their piano more than once per year. We offer a discount for multiple tunings done within the same calendar year.

How long does a piano tuning take?

Every piano is different and the duration of a tuning depends on many factors. If your piano has not been well-maintained (ie. tuned annually) you should allow for 3 hours of appointment time.
A tuning appointment for a routinely serviced piano usually takes 2h15m from arrival to departure.

What is a pitch correction? Will my piano need one?

Seasonal changes in humidity and temperature affect a pianos pitch. The piano's wood swells in the summer, which can increase tension on the strings and raise the pitch; and it contracts in the winter, which can reduce tension on the strings and lower the pitch. At the time of tuning, if a piano's pitch is found to be too high or low from its optimal pitch base (A440hz), then an overall pitch correction is done first in order to ensure that the fine tuning will be as effective and as stable as possible. Pitch measurements will be taken on site to determine whether your piano needs a pitch correction, and we'll be sure to tell you about it before the tuning begins.

Do I need to be quiet while you tune?

An overall quiet environment will definitely provide the best results for your piano. Occasional minimal noise is okay, but lengthy ambient noises (TV's, vacuums, nearby conversation) masks the frequencies we need to hear and can make a tuning take longer. Quiet is best, but if you have any questions or concerns just let us know and we'll work it out.
